Alcohol Treatment for College Students

College is a time when young people begin to experience some of the freedom, and responsibility associated with adulthood.  It is also one of the few times in a person’s life when binge drinking is considered socially acceptable behavior.  The sheer amount of alcohol available on college campuses can be staggering, and indeed for many “social drinkers” the environment is little more than a distraction or an occasional weekend fling.

For a small but significant percentage of young people however, what starts out in all innocence ends up becoming a full-blown addiction.  On campus alcoholism is one the rise, and the risks are great for those young people who suffer from the condition.

To help, there is alcohol treatment for college students – a chance to get sober and learn how to get the most out of college without resorting to the keg.

What makes Alcohol Treatment for College Students Unique?

The majority of college alcohol treatment programs are located on or around campus.   They are especially prevalent in those college towns that play host to a large research university that can support such institutions.   They are unique not only because they only treat young people, but also because they address college-age specific issues.   For example, you may find alcohol counseling at one of these programs that focuses on how to cope with the pressure of getting good grades without turning to alcohol.   Issues such as these speak directly to graduate and undergraduate students – and likely will NOT be found in any standard adult program.

What happens during Alcohol Treatment for College Students?

The first phase of alcohol treatment is detoxification.  Detox is the process by which an individual rids herself of the harmful toxins found in alcohol.   This process may be difficult, as the individual will likely experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.   But they will pass after a time, and the individual will begin to feel better physically – gaining the strength needed to continue on with the remainder of the program.

Next there is alcoholism counseling.  This is a chance to discover the root causes behind the alcohol addiction, and learn how to make better decisions about drinking and partying.  In the context of a college treatment setting, this may mean learning how to interact with one’s peers without using alcohol, as well as coping with academic stress in a healthier, more effective manner.

Finally, there is aftercare.   College students who take part in drug rehab aftercare learn how to maintain their sobriety once the treatment plan is complete.   This can be achieved through 12-step groups or follow-up counseling at the facility.
