Process for Addiction Rehabilitation

Far too many people do not seek out addiction rehabilitation simply because they are intimidated by the recovery process.  It is likely that if these men and women knew more about the inner workings of addiction treatment facilities they would come to understand the healing and help that goes on there – and be more likely to enroll themselves or their loved ones into rehab.

In an effort to provide clarity on this very important subject, the following information answers many of the basic questions that individuals have about addiction rehabilitation.

The Primary Steps

Although every addiction rehabilitation program has a different philosophy regarding treatment and care, there are three processes which play a role in almost every drug or alcohol rehab center in the United States:  detox, counseling and aftercare.  These three components help treatment centers address both the psychological and physical addiction to drugs and alcohol.

  • Detox.   Drug detox and alcohol detox come in two major types:  natural and medical.  Natural detox has the individual going cold turkey while in the care of medical professionals.  The medical team is present to help the individual make it through the withdrawal symptoms that occur during the process.  Detox withdrawal symptoms are not usually life-threatening, but then can cause discomfort, which leads to relapse (which is why the support of staff is so important).
  • Therapy/Counseling.   Addiction rehabilitation therapy and counseling address the psychological aspect of dependence.   These sessions are either private, one-on-one meetings (individual counseling), with a group of other recovering addicts (group counseling) or for members of the immediate family (family counseling).  What all these counseling types have in common is the goal of delving into the individual’s personal history in order to better understand the “triggers” for addiction – so that a plan can be put into place to better respond to stressful situations in the future.
  • Aftercare.   Aftercare is a wide variety of programs aimed at helping the individual maintain sobriety after the program is over.   These drug rehab aftercare programs can be as varied as 12-step meeting, addiction therapy at the facility or even time spent at a sober living home.

How long does Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Take?

Most addiction rehabilitation programs for drug and alcohol addiction take between one and two months to complete.  In the case of more serious addictions – where the individual has a history of self-harm behavior or relapse – the program may last a year or longer.

The cost of drug rehab varies from facility to facility. Some high-end treatment centers cost many thousands of dollars per month.  These expensive addiction treatment centers offer top amenities, resort-style living and gourmet cuisine.   The more affordable addiction treatment center types are the outpatient facilities that cost only a fraction of that amount and may even be covered by major insurance plans.
