Different Types of Drug and Alcohol Rehab Counseling
Counseling and therapy make up the heart of any professional addiction treatment program. Until the individual has addressed the core issues behind their addiction with treatment professionals, it is very hard to enact any serious change in their lives. There are different types of drug and alcohol rehab counseling within every treatment program – each one designed to help a different component of the individual’s psychological addiction.
Individual Counseling during Alcohol and Drug Treatment
The most common form of addiction treatment counseling is the individual session. During these meetings, the recovering addict meets one-on-one in a private setting with their counselor. The goals of these sessions are:
- To explore the root causes behind the individual’s addiction.
- To uncover the “triggers” or life stressors that lead to the individual’s drug and alcohol use.
- To develop life-strategies that help the individual maintain sobriety
- To help the individual make better decisions concerning drugs and alcohol.
Individual sessions meet regularly, sometimes as often as every day, but rarely less than three times per week while the individual is in treatment.
Group Counseling and Alcohol or Drug Rehab
Group sessions are an amazing opportunity for recovering addicts. Remember, most drug or alcohol addicts suffer alone, in isolation with their condition. For many, drug rehab group therapy sessions are the first time they have ever opened up about their past issues with other people. This openness alone creates breakthroughs for many people in treatment. As a “bonus”, the group itself becomes a kind of support structure, offering care and love to the individual who is willing to share their own experiences. Sometimes, just hearing the stories of other recovering addicts is enough to help people realize that they are not alone in their struggles against addiction.
