Quaaludes is the name by which the sedative drug methaqualone is popularly known. Used in the 1960s and 1970s as an hypnotic for the treatment of insomnia, as well as a sedative and muscle relaxant, It has also been used illegally as a recreational drug, particularly in 1970s North America. Methaqualone, however, is no longer legally produced, having been made a Schedule I drug in the US in 1984.
