Q #1
Describe some of your experience in the addictions field
A: First of all, I am in recovery myself for 32 years. I have been working as an addictions counselor for 30 years.
Q #2 Where have you worked?
A: I have been the Director of Treatment at 2 residential treatment facilities in Maryland that were casualties of managed care. I was the chief substance abuse counselor and Program Coordinator at the inpatient drug treatment program at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Towson Maryland for 4 years, For the past 20 years I have been Director ot Loyola University's drug and alcohol outpatient treatment and education program.
Q #3 Why Have you stayed in the treatment field?
A: I frankly love addicts and alcoholics, their humor, intelligence, and hardy spirit. There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing an idividual who experiences the joy of recovery from the disease of addiction.
Q #4 What is your treatment philosophy?
A: The basic goal of treatment is, in my view, to address the three aspects of addiction: the physical, the emotional/mental, and the spiritual. The ultimate goal, in my view, for most addicts and alcoholics is abstinence achieved through changes emotionally and spiritually. But, there are many avenues to abstinence. Some get there through buprenorphine or methadone assisted treatment. Some are able, over time, to achieve abstinence through the 12 Step programs usch as AA or NA. Some become abstinent through church. I consider it essential for any of these avenues to work that the individual devlop a relationship with a spiritual source of strength.
Q #5 Will you help individuals in methadone or buprenorphine assisted treatment?
A: Yes, but my goal will be for the individual to be, or become, abstinent from all drugs other than buprenorphine or methadone, including alcohol, and will help the person to work on emotional and spiritual changes that are needed for a good recovery, including separating from the drug culture.
