Getting Sober
The decision to take drugs and other mind-altering substances may have seemed easy to make at the time when you began. Deciding to get sober, however, is not. After all, the effects of alcohol and drugs have proven time and again to be so overwhelming that before you realize it, you already are an addict. What started as a way to drown your problems out becomes the problem itself, and can be even more consuming and painful than the original problem that drove you to using.
But before you think that having an addiction is like digging a hole from which there is no climbing out, you should realize that quite the opposite is true. You can get rid of your addiction, as countless addicts before you have done. All it requires from you, at the beginning at least, is the willingness to get sober and the courage to reclaim your life.
Just admitting that you are an addict and that you need help is by itself already a huge step towards overcoming your addiction. Even bigger still is actually taking that first step to rid yourself of all the junk in your system. But recovering from drug abuse and alcohol abuse starts with that first step. We understand that it's not easy, but if you really want your life and the lives of your loved ones to change for the better, you have got to take that first step.
As a recovering addict, you have to realize from the get-go that that first step could be a painful one, because it involves detoxifying your body from the substances it has become accustomed to for months, or even years. Your body will react to any drop, whether sudden or gradual, in the levels of the substance you have been taking, and in a way that is normal for it: to flush out the residue and recompense for the loss. Depending on the intensity and the length of time of your addiction, this withdrawal process can be either uncomfortable or entirely intolerable; unsupervised detoxification from some substances can be fatal Always seek the help of medical professionals to stay safe and alive!
Withdrawal symptoms are bound to happen, and the fear of it is what deters many addicts from beginning recovery. Many addicts who have tried to quit on their own have backtracked on their decision to sober up and eventually found themselves on the road to nowhere once again.
