Counseling Centers

At the heart of any good addiction recovery plan is drug rehab counseling.   Counseling and therapy help address the psychological component of addiction, and provide the individual with the tools he or she needs to maintain sobriety for the rest of her life.   Counseling centers offer an array of different counseling techniques, each designed to help the individual respond to stress and temptation in as healthy a manner as possible.

Why is Addiction Counseling Treatment so Important?

An individual who is addicted to drugs or alcohol is unlikely to be able to enact any real, long-lasting change in her life without professional counseling.   It is possible to “go cold turkey” and stay sober for a while, but without the foundation of therapy and counseling, the individual is at a terrific risk for relapse.

What are the Different Types of Counseling at Treatment Centers?

There are three primary types of addiction counseling that take place at most treatment centers across the United States:  individual, group and family.   Let’s take a moment to explore these programs in greater detail.

  • Individual counseling.   These are private one-on-one meetings between the individual and her therapist.   The individual can expect several of these sessions per week during her time in the care of the counseling center.   Individual counseling is a chance to explore the root causes of addiction.   The therapist will patiently review the individual’s personal history in an attempt to uncover why she began using drugs or alcohol in the first place.   The object is to identify the “triggers” (life stressors) that lead to drug or alcohol abuse.   The pair will then work together to develop alternate life strategies that help them respond more positively to these triggers moving forward.
  • Group counseling.   Group therapy sessions are, for many people, the first time they have ever spoken openly and honestly about their addiction with other people.    The great thing about group therapy is that the other people involved are other recovering addicts from the program.   These individuals provide support and positive feedback to the individual – leading to breakthroughs in treatment (and often, lifelong friendships).
  • Family counseling.   The individual with the addiction is not the only person impacted by the condition.  Family members offer bear much of the brunt of a drug addiction – seeing their relationships and familial bonds strained to the point of breaking as a result of the lies and broken promises that accompany a drug or alcohol problem.   Family therapy is a chance to repair broken relationships – giving members of the family a safe place to air their concerns and talk openly and honestly with the recovering addict about their feelings.   These programs also teach family members how to communicate with the individual in such a way that it aids the recovery process instead of hampering it.

An individual enrolled at a counseling center (or drug and alcohol rehab facility) can expect to encounter at least two of the programs listed above during the course of their treatment.

Where are Counseling Centers Located?

Addiction counseling can take place in one of two forums – a residential treatment program, or as a part of outpatient care.   Residential rehab counseling has the individual leave their home environment behind and enter a place where the only thing they need to focus on is their own recovery.   These programs are expensive, but they also offer the most comprehensive care and the highest levels of safety for the addicted individual.

Outpatient counseling allows the individual to attend sessions during the day, and then spend the rest of the time at work, school or in the home.   This is an attractive option for recovering addicts who cannot simply afford to drop everything in their lives to attend treatment 24/7.

Counseling centers can now be found in almost every medium or large city in the United States.   Major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York have the most treatment options due to their large populations and the percentage of individual living with addiction in these areas.

Paying for Addiction Treatment and Counseling

There are a number of reasons why recovering addicts have trouble paying for counseling and other elements of care, including:

  • They have lost their job as a result of addiction or substance abuse
  • They have looted their family’s savings in order to support their drug or alcohol habit
  • They simply cannot afford the high price tag associated with some treatment centers (some residential facilities can cost thousands of dollars per week to attend).

To help individuals better afford the life-saving care offered at counseling centers and rehab facilities, insurance companies are now offering coverage for many under their mental health plans.    Depending upon the plan or the facility in question, insurers may cover some or all of the cost of treatment.   Also, more and more addiction treatment centers are now offering financing options to help families offset the cost of drug rehab until that time when they are on more stable ground financially.  Although financing and credit do not remove the cost of care from the equation, they can be a true “life preserver” to those families that have seen their finances thrown in tatters as the result of addiction.

Why is Counseling and Therapy Important?

There are many components involved in helping an individual overcome their addiction to drugs and alcohol.   Detox is the means by which an individual overcomes their physical addiction – and aftercare gives men and women the tools they need to transition back into their daily lives without the assistance of drugs or alcohol.   It is what comes between these two processes, however, they may be the most important part of recovery:  counseling.   Drug and alcohol addiction counseling centers focus on this aspect of treatment – one that delves in the individual’s struggles at the core, by identifying why they use drugs and alcohol in the first place – and how they can better respond to the “triggers” that bring about their behavior.

Without the ability to address addiction at this “deep” level, the individual will continue to relapse again and again.   Counseling is important because it changes actual behavior and provides the individual with a new set of rules by which to live.
