Halfway Houses

Halfway houses or sober houses are a great way to transition from addiction to treatment to “the real world” at a pace that is comfortable for you and with the support you need to feel safe at all times. An extension of drug rehab with a less rigorous schedule, you will receive continued treatment at level that allows you to begin to build a new life in sobriety. Effective for men and women of all ages, a halfway house provides you with an added boost in drug rehab recovery and increases your chances for a long-term abstinence.

What is a Halfway House?

A halfway house provides those who have successfully completed a drug and alcohol treatment program with a place to stay while they go about finding a job and a more permanent home. A completely drug-free environment, you will have housemates who are in the same boat as you are: attempting to live without drugs and alcohol while putting their lives back together after addiction. Counselor and support staff live on site and provide you with the assistance you need to maintain your new responsibilities and assist you in remaining clean and sober in the process.

What Services Does a Halfway House Provide?

There are different types of halfway houses and each offers different services. Some offer a daily schedule of treatment and therapy to help you with drug addiction issues as well as any co-occurring psychological disorders that you suffer from. Most provide assistance with creating a resume and finding leads on jobs and housing. Some may even offer a sober companion to accompany you as you go on interviews. Across the board, you will find that halfway houses give you the space and time you need to regroup after drug rehab and continue to build up clean time and positive resources in recovery.

What are the Benefits of a Halfway House?

On a personal level, a halfway house provides you with a sense of safety and support as you make the transition from drug rehab to a home of your own. For many, the stresses that come with attempting  to find a new job and a new place to live are too much to handle on top of being newly clean and sober. A halfway house provides you with a soft place to land as you try to figure out what your next steps are and how to go about getting what you need. The onsite staff support also provides you with someone who understands what you are going through and knows the local resources well enough to point you in the right direction. Your housemates, as well, will add to your drug rehab support system in recovery as you make new friends and surround yourself with people who are living without drugs and alcohol.

What Do I Do All Day at a Halfway House?

Depending upon the halfway house you choose, you will either spend your time out in the world looking for employment, attending meetings and checking out rooms or houses for rent or you will be involved in treatment and therapy. There are different levels of commitment at different halfway houses and you may be expected to spend more or less time there depending upon whether the focus of their program is transition or continued treatment.

What is Expected of Me at a Halfway House?

First and foremost, you are expected to remain clean and sober at all times. Random drug tests will be given to everyone in the house to ensure that each person is upholding their commitment to sobriety throughout their stay.

There are other expectations of you that will vary depending upon the halfway house you choose. Most will require you to be involved in house meetings and abide by curfews and basic house rules. You may be expected to clean on a schedule or share chores like grocery shopping and cooking meals, attend 12 step or group meetings, and continue to address your personal issues with drug addiction through therapy.

Additionally, you may be expected to look for a job and housing. Since there is no guarantee that you will find either, you will not be penalized if you don’t but since most halfway houses will not allow you to stay longer than six months, it is advised that you take advantage of the resources available at the house and do your best to find employment and a new home.

Is There Staff Support or Counselors at a Halfway House?

Yes. The extent of support will vary at different halfway houses but a “house mom” or “house dad” is usually on site at all times, working in shifts. In some halfway houses, there is a clinical team on staff during the day who will provide you with educational classes, resume assistance, counseling and more. In other cases, staff members are on the premises in shifts, handling house meetings and other day-to-day functions of the house as needed. They are there to make sure that everyone is living according to the rules: abiding by curfews, contributing to household chores, remaining clean and sober and staying committed to their goals.

Who Lives in Halfway Houses?

Those who have successfully graduated from a drug and alcohol detox or addiction treatment program are eligible for continued treatment at a halfway house. Often people who were so deep in their addiction prior to treatment that they lost their jobs, families and/ or homes find it beneficial to stay in halfway houses until they are back on their feet again. Many simply don’t feel that the place they called home prior to drug rehab is an environment conducive to continued abstinence. In other words, they appreciate the security that comes with a halfway house and the knowledge that everyone around you at home is working through the same struggles and have the same goal of sobriety.

How Do I Get Into a Halfway House?

Halfway houses take applications just like drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs. You can usually start this process while you are still at a drug rehab center, but if you graduate from drug treatment and later determine that a halfway house is the right choice for you, counselors at the homes can assist you with the application process.
