Outpatient Care Consultations

Outpatient Care Overview

There are two primary types of rehab centers in the United States: residential (or “inpatient” as it also known) and outpatient.   Both of these program types offer the same core treatment components (including detox, counseling and aftercare), but differ in the manner in which patients receive care.   Residential rehab has individuals moving into the facility full time, but outpatient rehab allows individuals the freedom to attend treatment during the day, but return home or to a sober living home in the evening.

What are the Benefits of Outpatient Rehab?

While on the surface it may seem as if residential drug and alcohol rehab is always the preferred method of addiction treatment, there are actually a number of benefits to outpatient care that lead countless men and women to choose it over inpatient rehab every day.

Among the primary benefits of outpatient rehab are:

  • Ability to continue with work and school.   A residential treatment program requires the individual to put everything in their lives on hold while they pursue a recovery plan.  With outpatient rehab, the individual can maintain a limited but significant presence at work or school during treatment.
  • Proximity to support.   Individuals who gain strength from friends and loved ones may wish to choose an outpatient care program, as they can return home in the evening to be near these important individuals.
  • Lower cost.   Across the board, outpatient drug and alcohol rehab almost always costs less than residential treatment.  This can be an important factor for those families that have seen their finances placed in jeopardy as a result of one member’s addiction.

Where does Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment Take Place?

While residential rehab centers tend to be located in quiet, out-of-the-way areas around the country, outpatient treatment generally takes place within the busier parts of a city or town.   Most outpatient centers are hospital-like environments where the individual signs in before their first session in the morning, and then signs out in the evening.   On the surface, there is a more clinical feel to outpatient rehab, but these drug and alcohol treatment programs are still staffed by warm, caring professionals.

What Types of Conditions are Treated at Outpatient Rehab?

The following is a list of the most common individual addictions currently being treated at outpatient rehab centers around the country:

  • Cocaine addiction
  • Heroin addiction
  • Alcohol addiction
  • Vicodin addiction
  • OxyContin addiction
  • Marijuana addiction
  • Crystal Meth addiction
  • Amphetamine addiction

Who Should NOT Attend Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs?

Outpatient care is not made for everyone.  The following individuals may be better served by pursuing care at a residential treatment center instead of an outpatient facility.

  • Those with more serious addiction issues.   Individual suffering from very serious addiction issues need more constant care and support than an outpatient rehab center can deliver.
  • Those who have become a danger to themselves and others.   Any individual who has attempted or considered suicide, or engaged in destructive behavior (such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol) should consider enrolling a residential treatment program.
  • Those who live in a destructive environment.  Many times, it is the individual’s daily environment that creates the addiction (or makes it worse).  For these individuals, there is no benefit to returning home each evening after treatment – as it will only undo the progress made during the day.
  • Individuals who face temptation.   Those who live with friends or family members who use drugs or alcohol need to stay away from these individuals during treatment – even if they are considered loved ones.
  • Those with a history of relapse.  Finally, those men and women who have a history of relapse after entering treatment will have a better chance at success in residential care – where they are looked after and provided emotional support at all hours of the day.

The Importance of Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

Not everyone can afford high-end residential drug rehab.   For those families on a budget, but who still want to help their loved one achieve recovery, there is outpatient rehab.   Some people need to maintain their position as head-of-household, even as they are struggling to overcome alcoholism or drug addiction.  For these men and women, there is about outpatient care.   Outpatient drug and alcohol rehab is important because it provides another key option for treatment – opening the door to more and more people in need of detox, counseling, aftercare and other comprehensive treatment programs.
