Demerol Abuse Recovery Overview

Treatment Center Ratings ThumbnailIs your Demerol abuse affecting your work and your relationships? You don't have to suffer any longer, when help is available. The Demerol rehab centers listed on our directory understand how to treat an addiction to this drug, whose side effects include lightheadedness, dry mouth, constipation, and nausea.

What is Demerol?

Demerol is the common name for Pethidine, and is used to treat pain. This drug is an opioid, which puts it in the same class as morphine and heroin. It can be taken by mouth in tablets or a syrup. Demerol can also be injected, and is known as "Demmies" on the street. Demmies may be prescribed as an alternative to non-steroid anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS). When someone takes "Demmies," they experience a "rush" with a sense of euphoria, followed by period of deep relaxation.

Causes of Demerol Addiction

A person may start using Demerol for treatment of pain but find that they like the euphoric effect the drug gives them. They may still be aware of the fact that they are hurting, but the pain is not as much of an issue. Over time, the person develops a tolerance for "Demmies," and must take larger amounts of the drug to get the same effect. Altering the amount taken means that overdosing is a very real possibility. The drug also produces a psychological dependency and the user feels that they can't function (or at least function as well) without the Demmies in his or her system.

Treatment for Demerol Addiction

Demerol Rehabilitation Assessment ImageWhen you contact a Demerol rehab center for help, the first step is to go through a detoxification process. While you are getting free from the physical effects of the drug, the staff at the center will help you to develop your recovery goals. After detox has been completed, the addiction treatment can begin. As Demerol is a narcotic analgesic, a recovering addict would also do well to join Narcotics Anonymous meetings to help in the process.

Why Stop Using Demerol? A Few Good Reasons:

  • Demerol use can affect an individual's cognitive function and motor skills.
  • People with liver or kidney disease shouldn't take "Demmies."
  • Severe side effects of using Demerol include tremors, delirium, and seizures.
