What is GHB?
GHB is another term for gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, which is a substance that is naturally present in the body's central nervous system. It is also found in wine, beef, and small varieties of citrus fruits. GHB is available by prescription under the name "Xyrem" and is used to treat people with narcolepsy.
GHB, pictured here, is known on the street as "Liquid Ecstasy", "Liquid X", and "Liquid G." It is a depressant that produces a feeling of euphoria, an increased libido, and an enhanced appreciation for music and movement in small doses. Liquid Ecstasy may be used by people involved in the club scene. A person using "Liquid X" will feel the intoxicating effects for between 1.5 and 3 hours. The effects of using the drug will last longer if the person ingests it with alcohol.
Causes of GHB Addiction
"Liquid G" is physically addictive, and may also create a psychological dependency as well. Taking the drug repeatedly over several days can lead to addiction. If the person addicted to "Liquid X" doesn't get another dose, they start to go into physical withdrawal symptoms, including chest pain, muscle aches, insomnia, anxiety, and sweating.

Treatment for GHB Addiction
When you contact a GHB treatment clinic, the first thing that happens is that the staff will evaluate your condition and discuss the treatment plan with you. You will need to go through a medically-supervised detox process before you can begin the treatment and recovery portion of the program.
Why Quit Taking GHB? A Few Reasons
- "Liquid Ecstasy" is sometimes used as a general anesthetic, and can cause respiratory depression and cardiac arrest.
- Like Rohypnol, "Liquid X" is used as a date rape drug. The danger this represents can either be in the form of possibly being vulnerable to sexual assault or facing the serious criminal consequences of being caught with a "date rape drug".
- It's impossible to know when buying "Liquid G" illegally how potent the drug is, since the purity varies depending on the batch.
