What is Peyote?
Peyote is the common name for Lophophora williamsii. It is a small cactus with hallucinogenic properties that grows in parts of Texas and Mexico. Mescaline is derived from peyote. Users of the drug take peyote buttons growing at the top of the plant and allow them to dry. The dried buttons are then soaked in water to make a hallucinogenic liquid. Some users will chew or grind up the buttons into a powder and smoke it with tobacco to get high. Street names for peyote include "bad seed," "P," "half moon," and "nubs."
Causes of Peyote Addiction
A "P" trip starts within an hour or two of the substance being ingested and may last for up to 12 hours. The dependence on "bad seed" is psychological, as opposed to physical. The person using "half moon" slips into a dreamlike state after taking the drug. The person drifts along on their trip and experienced auditory and visual hallucinations along the way. People who have used "nubs" report that the experience allows them to look at themselves in a new light, and they use the substance as part of contemplating life.

Peyote Rehabs for Addiction Recovery
When you contact a peyote rehab clinic for help with a dependence on this substance, the staff will ask you some questions about your history with "half moon" to get an idea of your current state. Then they can devise a treatment plan that will help you replace using "nubs" with other activities.
Why Stop Using Peyote? Some Reasons to Consider
- Long-term effects on the brain of using "half moon" are not yet known.
- "P" users can experience flashbacks where they re-experience a previous trip.
- People who use "nerve pills" on a long-term basis are at increased risk of becoming depressed and/or having suicidal thoughts.
- There is no way to predict whether a "bad seed" trip will be a positive or negative experience beforehand.
